WICHE

Legislative Update 2007

Rosemary Goodfriend, Kiser Hardaway, and Dael Householder testified in front of the Joint Committee for Higher Education at the Legislature in January. They testified for continuing support of the WICHE (PSEP) Veterinary Medicine Slots.  They were very favorably received and hope that the program continues to fund 9 students each year for the next biennial budget.

What is WICHE?

Residents of Western states which do not have a college of veterinary medicine, such as Montana, may enter a Professional Student Exchange Program (PSEP) administered by the Western Interstate Commission for Higher Education (WICHE). You must apply for WICHE support at the time you apply for admission to CSU, OSU, or WSU.  In order to qualify for WICHE support, the state certifying officer must certify you as being a Montana resident. If you qualify and are accepted the state will pay  a support fee to the school of veterinary medicine in which you are accepted . WICHE students will then pay the same fees as resident students to CSU, OSU, and WSU. Applications for certification should be completed and mailed by October 15th of the year you submit your application to veterinary college. WICHE funding has been variable and currently funds 9 students per year. When applying for WICHE support you must apply to the following WICHE school (WSU, CSU, OSU) to ensure proper ranking of the Montana residents you are completing with. (UC Davis will accept students that are highly qualified but they will not take any WICHE money or slots in doing so). Applications for certification can be obtained by writing to the following address:

It is important that your application for WICHE certification not be late. Being late could jeopardize your certification and cost you up to $80,000 in additional fees for four years of veterinary school.
