Biocontrol of Weeds
A research effort has been underway since 1976 at the MSU Western Agricultural
Research Center (WARC) at Corvallis to manage several exotic rangeland weeds
through the use of host-specific natural enemies (all insects) introduced from
Eurasia, where the weeds originate. Currently, most of the research is
directed against spotted knapweed, Centaurea
stoebe subsp. micranthos = C. maculosa. Research
emphasis is on the introduction, establishment, augmentation, population dynamics,
and efficacy of the introduced insects, and the integration of biological control
with other weed management practices.
